❄️ 6 things you should definitely do well for winter protection before the cold arrives

Protect your home, your belongings, and your wallet before the freezing point arrives

When the temperature started to continue to drop and there was a piercing chill in the morning air for the first time, I knew that winter was really coming.
Whether you live in the northern United States surrounded by heavy snow or occasionally experience cold waves in the south, ‘winterization’ is something that every homeowner should not ignore.

Over the years, I have deeply experienced:
👉 Good winter preparation is not just about making your home more comfortable
👉 Can better avoid expensive emergency repairs
👉 It can even help you save a considerable amount of heating costs throughout the winter 💸

As Kevin Busch, Vice President of Operations at Mr. Handyman, said:

Taking some time in advance to prepare houses, yards, and equipment for winter can ensure that they can operate normally for many years to come, while avoiding unnecessary repairs or replacements

And David Flax, President of Window Genie, also reminds us:

Winter protection is not only about protecting items, but also about protecting your energy expenditure and living comfort.

Below, based on my own experience and the key points repeatedly emphasized by experts, I will share 6 things that you should definitely complete before the cold arrives. Whether you are a new homeowner or an experienced resident for over a decade, this list is worth checking item by item ✅

1️⃣ Clean drainage ditches and downspouts(Gutters & Downspouts)

If you only plan to do one thing before winter arrives, I would not hesitate to suggest:
👉 First, clean the drainage ditch.

In cold regions, blocked drainage ditches can easily lead to ice dams, which can prevent melting snow from being properly drained and ultimately allow water to flow back into roofs or walls.
Even in areas with little snow, the rainstorm in winter may also cause water leakage.

What do I usually check?

  • 🍂 Is the drainage ditch filled with fallen leaves
  • 🐦 Is there a bird’s nest or debris
  • 🔧 Is the downpipe draining smoothly
  • 🧊 Is it easy for water to accumulate and freeze near the drainage outlet

Small suggestion:
If you don’t want to clean multiple times a year, you can consider installing Gutter Guard (drainage ditch protection net), which can be invested in once and benefit for many years.

2️⃣ Outdoor faucet: a key step in preventing water pipe bursts 🚰

I have heard too many stories about friends who forgot to deal with their outdoor faucets, resulting in expensive repair bills after a cold night.

Kevin Busch’s suggestion is very clear:

If conditions permit, turn off the water source to the external faucet and open the faucet to completely drain any remaining water

Why is this step so important?

  • Frozen water will expand
  • Expansion can directly cause water pipes to burst
  • Repairs often occur during the coldest and busiest times 😩

My additional approach:

  • 🧢 Install Faucet Cover for Outdoor Faucet
  • 🔍 Even for the ‘antifreeze faucet’, I will check it again

This small investment can really help you save hundreds or thousands of dollars.

3️⃣ Outdoor equipment for winterization of all water usage 💦

All outdoor equipment that uses water, except for faucets, needs to be properly treated before winter arrives.

Commonly overlooked devices include:

  • 🌱 garden hose
  • 🚿 Sprinkler/Sprinkler System
  • 🧼 high-pressure washer
  • 🚗 Car washing water equipment

Special Reminder:

Thoroughly draining the water from these devices is the key to avoiding frost damage and high maintenance costs in spring

My to-do list:

  • ✔️ Remove the water pipe and completely drain it
  • ✔️ Spray out the sprinkler system
  • ✔️ The equipment is stored uniformly in the garage or basement

Believe me, the smoothness of the spring reopening will make you very grateful for this effort.

4️⃣ Fireplace: Before warming up, ensure safety first🔥

The fireplace in winter is really healing.
But you know what? Unused fireplaces also require ‘winter preparation’.

My small suggestion is:

If the fireplace is not commonly used in winter, be sure to close the air door to prevent cold air from constantly entering the room

What if your fireplace doesn’t have a damper?

  • 🧻 The opening can be temporarily sealed with cardboard or specialized sealing materials
  • ⚠️ Remember: Before using the fireplace, be sure to remove it!

Additional reminder:

  • 🧹Perform a chimney inspection before winter use
  • 🔌 If it is an electric fireplace, check the safety of the wiring and sockets

A well prepared fireplace can truly bring warmth, not hidden dangers.

5️⃣ Windows and doors: guarding against heat means guarding against money 💰

Among all my winter protection lists, the sealing of windows and doors has the greatest impact on heating costs.

Step 1: Lock all windows

It sounds simple, but locking the window can make the window frame fit more tightly and effectively reduce heat loss.

Step 2: Check the sealing strip and sealant

  • Is it aging
  • Is it cracked
  • Do you need to re glue

Point out:

Installing windproof windows or window films can significantly reduce heat loss caused by glass

Affordable options include:

  • 🪟 Plastic window insulation kit
  • 🎥 Professional or DIY window film
  • 🐍 Door Draft Stopper

These seemingly inconspicuous small objects often make the indoor temperature more stable and comfortable throughout the winter.

6️⃣ Don’t forget the garage door🚪

Many people tend to overlook garages, but in fact——
The garage is one of the important passages for cold air to enter the interior.

I will focus on checking:

  • 🧽 Is the bottom sealing strip intact
  • 📏 Is the side edge tightly attached
  • 🧊 Is there any obvious cold air infiltration

If your garage door does not have insulation, we highly recommend:

Installing garage door insulation kit is a simple and DIY project that can be found in most hardware stores

🧤 Winter preparation is a sign of respect for home

Every winter, I spend one to two weekends checking and completing these tasks one by one.
They are not complex or expensive, but they can:

  • ✅ Make the home warmer
  • ✅ Reduce energy expenditure
  • ✅ Avoid sudden repairs
  • ✅ Make the whole winter more peaceful

Winter is already cold enough, your home shouldn’t worry you anymore.
Take some time to prepare now, and in the coming months, you will definitely thank yourself for who you are now.
